Controls Technician - HVACR

SUMMARY

The Controls Technician is responsible for the installation and repair of control systems. They must have a thorough understanding of HVAC systems sequence of operations (Hydronics, AHUs, VAVs, etc.). The controls technician will program, commission, diagnose, and troubleshoot various DDC systems. Knowledge of testing equipment, gauges, meters, tools, math, and blueprint comprehension are necessary to accurately document malfunctions, diagnose, troubleshoot, and program control systems. They will also apply judgment and discretion when dealing with the testing and repair of these systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Ability to safely and efficiently install controls components
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical or programming issues
  • Installation and repair of various manufacturers’ equipment and controls. Perform required installation and repair of various protocols including but not limited to BACnet, Lonworks, and Modbus etc.
  • Project coordination, project management and field supervision including turnover meetings, attending project meetings, coordination between Controls Department and all other divisions along with engineers, general contractors, construction managers, customer building supervisors, equipment vendors, subcontractors, balancers and commissioning agents.
  • Operate heavy equipment and machinery in the performance of these essential duties
  • Work with and around hazardous materials, as well as at heights and in confined spaces in the performance of these essential duties
  • Drive a vehicle to various jobsites throughout working hours a. Maintain valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets company policy
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner
  • Regular attendance and punctuality are essential for employee job performance
  • Perform other duties as assigned

ENVIRONMENT, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Exposure to varying indoor and outdoor conditions, loud noise, dust, toxic chemicals and materials; slippery or uneven walking surfaces; working at heights on ladders, scaffolds, platforms, in ditches/excavations, on top of and underneath single story and multi-story building
  • Must be able to lift up to 75lbs
  • Must be able to perform manual and repetitive tasks and body movements including standing and/or walking for long periods of time, bending, stooping, climbing, reaching, pulling, pushing, lifting, and carrying
  • Must be able to complete job duties proficiently while adapting to changing demands and priorities
  • Must have the ability to work in a constant state of alertness and concentrate for long periods of time to perform duties in a safe manner
  • This position is subject to ergonomic testing

SAFETY SENSITIVE

This position is designated as a safety sensitive position because it includes as part of the job duties operating a motor vehicle, the operating, maintaining, and monitoring of heavy equipment and machinery, and working with and around hazardous materials, at heights, and in confined spaces. This position is one in which a lapse of attention could result in injury, illness, or death. For the safety of the employee and others, the employee must be able to work in a constant state of alertness and concentrate for long periods of time while operating, maintaining, and monitoring heavy equipment and machinery, and while working with and around hazardous materials, at heights, and in confined spaces.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, REQUIREMENTS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to safely work in a construction environment
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred
  • Knowledge of basic construction methods
  • Competent in Tridium Niagra environment
  • Competent in front-end graphical interfaces
  • Competent in various networks: twisted pair, BBMD, VPNs, etc.
  • Experience in programming DDC controllers like Honeywell, JCI, or Distech.
  • Experience in commissioning and troubleshooting DDC systems
  • Ability to dismantle malfunctioning systems and test components, using electrical mechanical, and pneumatic testing equipment
  • Ability to plan and carry out installation of controls components
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical or programming issues
  • Ability to communicate clearly with clients and other employees
  • All employees must provide and maintain the required tool inventory for this position Ability and willingness to work non-standard schedule: nights, weekends and holidays as/if required
  • Good organizational and time-management skills
  • Good at math, communication, and computer skills
  • Ability to complete daily tasks with limited supervision and minimal errors requiring re-work
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime and non-standard schedule: nights, weekends and holidays as/if required
  • A current valid driver’s license is required
